Tasks or Action Items for Session on Space Weather SECCHI Consortium meeting,  Stanford

On the structure of the SW Group, the consensus was that our group should be open to all the STEREO instrument teams as well as outside scientists interested in space weather.  It is OK to keep the present NRL SECCHI internet site, but to link it as needed elsewhere such as the GSFC STEREO Science Center. We should use the website interactively, especially for sending email to the entire group.  Comments, ideas, changes to the site are solicited.  Webb has added some names to the email list; please review it and suggest additional names.

  • Action: Webb; all
  • Deadline: as needed

Joe Davila mentioned that GSFC has money to support some STEREO-related workshops and subsequent book writeups.  We discussed having standalone SW workshops and continuing separate sessions at SECCHI and STEREO meetings.  The first opportunity for a standalone workshop might be in Spring 2004, possibly with a Beacon meeting at Boulder.

  • Action: All
  • Deadline: end of 2002

We discussed the use of flags to trigger specific sequences for events.  There was particular interest in how or whether to use flags for the HIs, e.g., a flag for coincident events seen in  both COR2 and HI-1.

  •
  • Actions:
    •
    • EUVI, COR1, COR2: Plunkett?
    • COR2/HI-1 overlap: Mathews (RAL), Socker (NRL), others?
    • HIs: Mathews (RAL), Socker (NRL) others?

  • Deadline: Initial inputs by end of 2002

We discussed only in general how the data from each SECCHI experiment might be implemented in the Beacon mode.  Lang discussed some ideas for HI, such as continuously downloading N-S strips of images.  More thinking is needed about how to use the SECCHI images and all the STEREO data in the Beacon mode and for space weather purposes generally.

  • Actions:
    • EUVI: ???
    • COR1: ???
    • COR2: Plunkett
    • HIs: Mathews, Webb, etc.
    • SWAVES: Kaiser?
    • IMPACT: Luhmann
    • PLASTIC: Galvin?

  • Deadline: Spring 2003

Although not specifically discussed, it was apparent that ground processing requirements for developing the SW tools need to be identified for each instrument and for specific operations. This task could and maybe should be run in parallel with the above task.  I have no idea who should be involved in this but clearly Dennis Wang and Nathan Rich need to be involved. Possibly those identified as the POCs for the above tasks could also do this one.

  • Actions: Same as above + Rich and Wang
  • Deadline: Spring 2003

Some modeling efforts as they concern CMEs and space weather were discussed, mainly by Janet Luhmann and Murray Dryer.  However, no general conclusion were reached.  Clearly, our group needs to interact with the 3D and MHD groups in as much as their efforts are related to space weather, specifically CMEs aimed at Earth.  Development and evaluations of different kinds of models and reconstructions for space weather are needed.  But work in these areas for SECCHI purposes will probably be slow because of lack of funding, so no specific actions are identified for now.  (However, inputs and comments are solicited!)

We discussed the use of data from the upcoming SMEI mission and from the past HELIOS spacecraft as test beds for HI data reduction and analysis.

  • Actions:
    • SMEI: Webb
    • HELIOS: Luhmann (Webb)

  • Deadline: SMEI when available; HELIOS ???.

Partners with X-band antennas are needed for receiving and processing the Beacon data. However, no general conclusions were reached.

  • Actions:
    • St. Cyr
    • Webb will investigate Air Force possibilities.

  • Deadline: end of 2002

The possibility of making a poster for SECCHI/STEREO space weather promotion was discussed.  Also we could use images or drawings to put on the website.

  • Actions: Howard, Webb
  • Deadline: Spring 2003
